The term anime– the Japanese word for ‘animation’ generally refers to animation originating from Japan. The printed counterpart is called manga. Specific to Japan is Shintoism, a religion that deems the Japanese islands and people as divine. According to the pagan religion of Shintoism, the Japanese people are direct descendants of the many gods and spirits (kami) living throughout the islands. Shrines to the different gods or spirits are common in Japan, and the themes of Shintoism are also common in anime and manga. Some anime thrives on the topic of religion, using Japanese culture as a setting for fantasy adventures in which the spirit world and humanity mingle, either pleasantly or unpleasantly. Given the mystical foundation of Eastern culture, anime also tends to employ elements of the occult such as tarot cards, incantations, and more. In anime, the characters usually (or often) draw their power from beasts such as foxes, wolves, serpents, snakes, dragons, lions, etc., from which they call their own ‘life force’. Serpents or snakes, dragons, lions, and wolves are Biblical representations of demons and satan. Moreover, a lot of the heroes tend to be boastful and prideful, which God sees as an abomination (Prov. 8:13). Characters in Japanese Anime typically bring some form of destruction through either physical powers, or spiritual powers under the name of ‘chakra’, ‘zen’, ‘aura’, or chi (qi) or just ‘spiritual energy.’ The spirits behind such powers are demonic! Anime has a reputation for graphic violence and sexual content. While not every anime movie is extremely sexual or extremely violent, most examples of anime do come with varying levels of it. The Bible reads God hates those who love violence (Ps. 11:5), but to think on things that are pure and lovely (Phil 4:8), and not to set thine eyes on any wicked things (Ps. 101:3), and not to love the world nor the things of the world (1 John 2:15).

One example of an anime that is disturbing is called Black Butler:

“Black Butler” is an animated series from Japan; hence, it has occult themes as so much anime does. However, this program IS POPULAR IN THE U.S., so do not dismiss this as irrelevant. It is a profoundly dark story that deserves a strong warning. Frankly, even with all I’ve come across in my life before Christ and in doing my ministry, I was dismayed by this.

Ciel is the main character who sells his soul to Sebastian, a demon who becomes his butler, the “black butler” of the title:

Sebastian decided to adopt a “role that is best fit to serve an Earl”, therefore taking a form of a butler, until Ciel completes his personal mission of revenge—that is the substance of their contract. In return, Sebastian will receive Ciel’s soul. He was then given the name “Sebastian” by Ciel, which used to be his dog’s name, for the duration of his duties as Ciel’s butler”

The “seal” on Ciel’s eye is a pentagram.

There is another character, Doll, a female who at times dresses as a boy. Doll is not much of a doll (warning: sexual innuendo):

I think the above speaks for itself. It is about revenge and the characters are beyond unsavory. Darkness is not even disguised but is emphasized. There seems to be no redemptive themes or focus.

And to make it worse, there are many products spun off this series: key chains, dolls, pendants, vinyl figures, alarm clocks, posters, bracelets, watches, and more.

Finally, here is a disturbing insight from an Anime review site about a sexual theme in the series:

“But at its core, Black Butler is what’s called a shotacon anime – a show about relationships involving young boys and older partners. Each episode spends a fair amount of screen time on Ciel and Sebastian’s weird relationship. Sometimes Sebastian comes out on top, as he uses his physical prowess and unflappable demeanor to rescue helpless Ciel from a kidnapping or a fight. Sometimes it’s a switch and it’s Ciel who’s in charge, reminding us who is lord and master as he orders his butler to perform humiliating, repugnant, or demeaning tasks. Lord and butler trade verbal spars, often calling one another dogs; the young master even says “Woof”, more than once. When you get to the episode where young Ciel is fitted into a corset so that he can cross-dress as a little girl, so that he might seduce another lord at least 15 years his senior … yeah, all doubts are off.
