Automatic writing comes from channeling a (demonic) spirit. Channeling includes different forms. For example, one form brings complete loss of consciousness, while another involves partial loss of consciousness. Thus, there is full trance possession with a total loss of consciousness, and light-to-moderate trance possession, in which the channeler retains partial or even full awareness. There is “clairaudient” channeling, where the medium hears the words dictated by the (demonic) spirits, as was true for Helen Schucman, the human amanuensis behind the popular New Age A Course in Miracles. Another form is known as “automaticism,” where the spirit seems only to control parts of the body, such as the hands in automatic writing or painting. The Eastern guru Sri Chinmoy, a so-called spiritual advisor at the United Nations, claims to have produced thousands of such paintings (Reference: Encyclopedia of New Age Beliefs).

Robert Plant of the Rock Band Led Zeppelin described the automatic nature of the lyric: “‘I was just sitting there with Pagey in front of a fire at Headley Grange. Pagey had written the chords and played them for me. I was holding a paper and pencil, and for some reason, I was in a very bad mood. Then all of a sudden my hand was writing out words. There’s a lady who’s sure, all that glitters is gold, and she’s buying a stairway to heaven. I just sat there and looked at the words and then I almost leaped out of my seat’.” Robert Plant often remarked that he could feel his pen being pushed by some higher authority.

Tolkien said regarding his book The Silmarillion, which purportedly set the stage for The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, “My work has escaped from my control, and I have produced a monster: an immensely long, complex, rather bitter, and very terrifying romance, quite unfit for children (if fit for anybody);”

L. Frank Baum explained how he came to write the book:
“It was pure inspiration…. It came to me right out of the blue. I think that sometimes the Great Author has a message to get across and He has to use the instrument at hand. I happened to be that medium, and I believe the magic key was given me to open the doors to sympathy and understanding, joy, peace and happiness.”

Aleister Crowley, one of the most wicked satanist of the 20th century, claimed: “the Book of the Law” was dictated to him by a discarnate entity named Aiwass.

Channeling is important to the New Age Movement because many of these deceiving spirits give or impart information on a wide variety of New Age philosophies and practices. In fact, channeling as a whole is one of the pillars of the New Age Movement.

What does the Bible read about channeling?

Leviticus 19:31 “‘Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God.”

Leviticus 20:6 “‘And the person who turns to mediums and familiar spirits, to prostitute himself with them, I will set My face against that person and cut him off from his people.”

From this day forward, I will no longer be controlled by sin, or the desire to please myself, but I will follow You all the days of my life. Those days are in Your hands. I ask this in the Lord and GOD Jesus’ precious and holy name. Amen.”
