1. To obtain instructions. To keep His words in our hearts.

“Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.” (Job 22:22)

2. To obtain corrections, which lead to life.

“For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life.” (Proverbs 6:23)

3. To help us obey God. To avoid sin. 

“Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.“ (Psalm 119:9-11)

4. To give us joy as we do God’s will. To keep His words in our heart. 

“Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me, I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.” (Psalm 40:7-8)

5. To guard ourselves from false teachings and teachers. 

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.” (1 John 4:1)

6. To obtain wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. To obtain success and protection.

“For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.” (Proverbs 2:6-7)

7. To obtain conviction of sins.   

“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)

8. To receive encouragement and hope. To be taught.

“For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus.” (Romans 15:4-5)

9. To prevent us from getting lazy or comfortable.

 “Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord.” (Romans 12:11)

10. To obtain confidence. To destroy fear. To stop worrying about what people think of us.

“In God, whose word I praise, in the LORD, whose word I praise in God I trust and am not afraid. What can man do to me?” (Psalm 56:10-11)

11. To obtain faith.

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Romans 10:17)

12. To grow spiritually.

“As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.” (1 Peter 2:2)

13. To use as spiritual armor against Satan.

“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” (Ephesians 6:11)

 “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” (Ephesians 6:17)

14. To illuminate our path in this dark world. To guide us.

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” (Psalms 119:105)

15. To be blessed and prosperous. To bear good fruit. 

“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” (Psalms 1:1-3)

16. To make us more efficient workers for God.

“¹⁶ All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:¹⁷ That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

17. To learn how to use our time wisely.

“See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.”  (Ephesians 5:15-16)

     

18. To sanctify us.

“Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” (John 17:17)

“That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,” (Ephesians 5:26)

“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.” – (John 16:13)

If you don’t know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you can receive Him into your heart, and He can deliver you from darkness and sin and have your name written in His Book of Life.

If you are sincere, you can say this simple prayer to the Father (it doesn’t have to be word for word):

“God, I recognize that I have not lived my life for You up until now. I have been living for myself and that is wrong. Please forgive me of all of my sins, just as I forgive others. I need You in my life; I want You in my life. I acknowledge the completed work of Your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ in giving His life for me on the cross, I believe in my heart Jesus is Lord and was raised from the dead and I long to receive the forgiveness you have made freely available to me through this sacrifice. Come into my life now, Lord. Take up residence in my heart and be my king, my Lord, and my Savior. From this day forward, I will no longer be controlled by sin, or the desire to please myself, but I will follow You all the days of my life. Those days are in Your hands. I ask this in the Lord and GOD Jesus’ precious and holy name. Amen.”
