“I am God” (Meher Baba, in Purdom, The God-Man, p. 329). Bhagavan Baba said, “Yes, I am God and so are you. The only difference between you and I is that while I am aware of this fact, you are not (source).” Some of these so-called god-men of India have drawn in millions into believing they are god (source).
The lie that man can be god has spread to the West through false religions and cults (primarily the New Age) and many have fallen for it.
According to New Agers, there is no God to whom worship is due because we are all God. Deepak Chopra says:
“In reality we are divinity in disguise…gods and goddesses in embryo.”

It is the popular New Age book promoted by Oprah called “The Secret”, Byrne writes: 
“You are God in a physical body. You are Spirit in the flesh. You are Eternal Life expressing itself as You. You are a cosmic being. You are all power. You are all power. You are magnificence. You are all intelligence . You are the creator.” The Secret, p.164.
Satan has recycled the same lie from the garden of Eden:
“And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.“- Genesis 3:4-5 KJV
However, the Bible warns:
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.“- 1 Peter 5:8-9 KJV
The Secret also instructs its readers that the primary way to achieve this god-like status is to use the words: “I Am”:
“When you say “I am”, the words that follow are summoning creation with a mighty force, because you are declaring it to be fact. You are stating it with certainty…Knowing this, wouldn’t it be a good idea to begin to use the two most powerful words, I am, to your advantage? How about, “I am receiving every good thing. I am happy. I am abundant. I am healthy. I am love. I am always on time. I am eternal youth…”
Shirley MacLaine, the movie celebrity and purveyor of New Age spirituality said:
“I know that I exist, therefore, I AM. I know that the god-source exists. Therefore, IT IS. Since I am part of that force, then I AM that I AM.” [Shirley MacLaine, Dancing in the Light, Epilogue, no page number]
Popular music idols of today call themselves “I am” (notice the focus on self rather than the Creator):

However, the first Commandment of the 10 Commandments God gave was “I am the LORD thy God, ….Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” (Exodus 20:2-3)
Jesus Christ warned (Mark 13:6) “For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.” In the Greek, He literally said many will come in my name, “saying I am.” (Source)
If you don’t know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you can receive Him into your heart, and He can deliver you from darkness and sin and have your name written in His Book of Life.
If you are sincere, you can say this simple prayer to the Father (it doesn’t have to be word for word):
“God, I recognize that I have not lived my life for You up until now. I have been living for myself and that is wrong. Please forgive me of all of my sins just as I forgive others. I need You in my life; I want You in my life. I acknowledge the completed work of Your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ in giving His life for me on the cross, I believe in my heart Jesus is Lord and was raised from the dead and I long to receive the forgiveness you have made freely available to me through this sacrifice. Come into my life now, Lord. Take up residence in my heart and be my king, my Lord, and my Savior. From this day forward, I will no longer be controlled by sin, or the desire to please myself, but I will follow You all the days of my life. Those days are in Your hands. I ask this in the Lord and GOD Jesus’ precious and holy name. Amen.”
