Who is this Lilith or Lillith?

When evangelizing, I have come across several people, mostly pagans and atheists/agnostics, who bring up Lilith and are even sympathetic towards her. Strangely, even those who purport to not believe in anything spiritual would even reference this mythical/spiritual entity. It’s amazing to me how much Lilith has permeated many aspects of popular culture in America. Indeed, Lilith gets around quite a bit, serving as source material in today’s Western culture, literature, occultism, vampire fantasy, and horror. In most manifestations of her, Lilith represents chaos, seduction, and ungodliness. Yet, in her every guise, Lilith has cast a spell on humankind.

What appears to be the demon “Lilith” on full display on a billboard in Times Square advertising a video game called “Devil” in Spanish with the apocalyptic-looking sky.
As of the time of this writing, a series called Hazbin Hotel is one of the most popular content on Amazon Prime Video. In fact, it was revealed that Hazbin Hotel is the largest global debut for a new animated series on Prime Video. The series revolves around Charlie Morningstar, princess of Hell, on her quest to find a way for demons to be “rehabilitated” and allowed into heaven. She opens a rehabilitation hotel, called the “Hazbin Hotel”, which offers demons a chance at redemption. Yeah, I would avoid indulging in this. The image is of the character named Lilith, the queen of hell, who refuses to be subservient to Adam.
I wouldn’t indulge in reading fictional books like this.

Who or What is Lilith?

Her name and personality are thought to be derived from the class of Mesopotamian demons called lilû (feminine: lilītu), and the name is usually translated as “night monster” (source). Another source reads that her dark origins lie in Babylonian demonology, where amulets and incantations were used to counter the sinister powers of this winged spirit. In Mesopotamia, she had a reputation as a seducer of men and murderer of children. Lilith is also a figure in Jewish folktales, some New Age writings, Goddess spirituality, and feminist theological writings. She is mentioned in the Dead Sea Scrolls, a collection of ancient manuscripts that are approximately two thousand years old. She is even mentioned in the Babylonian Talmud and the Kabbalah.

The evil Lilith is depicted on this ceramic bowl from Mesopotamia. It has inscribed incantations. They resorted to magic to protect themselves from Lilith.

One source reads that “Lilith uttered the name of God, grew wings, and flew way from the Garden of Eden. She hid in a cave by (or under) the sea, where she had (presumably more liberated relations with demons) and bore them children…..She became known as the Queen of the Demons, and is described as having long, wild hair and wings. Sometimes she is presented as the consort of Ashmedai, king of the Jewish demons; other times, as the companion of Samael, the purely evil ruler of the godless demons.”

Warning: This article continues giving more tales about Lilith and her demon children serving as succubi and incubi and gets quite dark and distasteful.

She is alleged to have been the first wife of Adam, but she refused to submit to him so, according to some tales, she left him by sprouting wings and flying away. One or more of the following is also written about her:

*She became the consort of Satan, even bringing evil offspring into the world.

*She is an early feminist heroine who defied a mean God who allegedly wanted women to be subservient to men.

*She is a demon or the Queen of demons.

Keep in mind that these fables are not based on any biblical evidence.

When I Googled and searched on IG for Lilith images, I found her usually depicted with wings and/or horns, as a demon, a scary nightmarish figure, a seductress, or a beautiful goddess-type figure.

Is there a biblical reference to Lilith?

The only reference is found in Isaiah 34:14. The Hebrew word לִיִלית is transliterated as “liyliyth.” Strong’s concordance defines the Hebrew word in Isaiah 34:14 as “a female night-demon.” It has been translated as night demon, night monster, night creature, night bird, nocturnal animal, or screech owl. At this link on Bible Hub, you can see the various ways it is translated.

Examples:

“The desert creatures will meet with the wolves, The hairy goat also will cry to its kind; Yes, the night monster will settle there And will find herself a resting place.” — New American Standard

“The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the wild beasts of the island, and the satyr shall cry to his fellow; the screech owl also shall rest there, and find for herself a place of rest.” — King James

“And wild animals shall meet with hyenas; the wild goat shall cry to his fellow; indeed, there the night bird settles and finds for herself a resting place. — ESV

The context seems to be a prophetic pronouncement of God’s judgment on the nations and pictures the desolation faced by these nations. Since the verse seems to list animals, the screech owl or night bird makes the most sense; although another way to see it is that allowing demons to inhabit the emptied lands reveals the abandonment of God (see Matthew 12:43 for a possible reference to this idea).

Lilith in Contemporary Beliefs

Walker Art Center once held a pagan session targeting children. “Families are invited to create a vessel to trap the demon that knows them best—perhaps the ‘demon of overthinking’—and then participate in a playful ceremony to summon and befriend their demon.”

In the 20th century, she was rebranded from a malevolent figure to one worthy of respect. In fact, in 2021, Lilith was the 267th most popular name for girls. In modern New Age and Goddess Spirituality, she has become a feminist figure who defies God and is therefore an archetype of a strong woman. The well-known Lilith Fair in the 1990s, which featured female artists such as Sarah McLachlan and Erykah Badu, was undoubtedly based on this image of Lilith.

Lilith is a Real Entity or Kind of Entity

When doing research on another topic, I came across an article about a Singaporean, Grace, who has Lilith as one of her deities! It reads she “sees herself as a holistic healer who seeks the guidance of seven goddesses, or as she calls them, her ‘matriarchs’: Lilith, Hecate, Morrigan, Persephone, Hela, Baba Yaga and Pele. ‘When I was younger, I was drawn to the name Lilith, and the dark goddess eventually became my first guide,’ she says. For Grace, it was affinity that got her to be acquainted with her goddess guides. ‘My other guides came into my life later on, whether by the introduction from one guide or another. They came in when I really needed their guidance, and I am thankful for that.'”
Getting a tattoo, especially of a demonic figure, can open a door to demonization.

Many may say that Lilith is a mere myth or legend without any grounding in reality. I disagree. As mentioned before here, I believe at least some mythical figures are inspired by the spiritual realm — satan’s kingdom influences the natural world more so than people realize. Indeed, if it weren’t a real entity or a kind of entity, why have so many people given some form of homage to this entity in many cultures, and even today? What spirit compels a person to get a tattoo of a depiction of Lilith of all things (by the way, getting such a tattoo can open a person to demonization)? The idea or perception of this entity may be accurate to what this spiritual entity or kind of spiritual entity really is. Remember, the Bible reads “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Eph. 6:12).

Jesus Has Authority Over All of Satan’s Kingdom

I have come across this spirit or kind of spirit when praying for deliverance for people. A few months ago, I prayed for deliverance for a man who was severely demonized. He had serious issues of lust. When I asked for the spirit’s name, it gave me the name Lilith! When pressed, by the name and authority of the Lord Jesus Christ, to tell me how it got inside the man, it said it got in through his yielding to sex in his perverted dreams. I followed up with him, and he said he was completely delivered from the lustful thoughts and perverted dreams. It shows the power and authority of the name of Jesus, who is the head of all principalities (Col. 2:10). Amen.

A Prayer Renouncing Lilith

Heavenly Father, I want to thank you for the Blood of Jesus, Your only-begotten Son, that reconciles us back unto you and cleanses us from all sin. In the name of Jesus the Messiah, I declare that I am born again of God and that no evil spirit has any hold over me. I belong to you, Abba Father, spirit, soul, and body.

I submit myself to you, Abba Father, and I resist the devil in the powerful name of Jesus the Messiah, and therefore he must flee.

Father, forgive me for allowing Lilith into my life and for yielding to her seduction. Forgive me for allowing lust to control me and for allowing unholy soul ties to be formed. Forgive me, Abba Father, for defiling my mind with lust. I renounce lust as sin in Jesus’ name.

Father, I now declare a divorce between myself and Lilith and all her children. I tear up the marriage certificate, and I give back her wedding ring. I ask that your Holy Fire, in the Name of Jesus the Messiah, will destroy all the documents that testify against me in the spirit.

I break any and all relationships between every evil spirit of lust and seduction and myself. I sever every unholy soul tie between myself and Lilith and all her other names, with the Sword of the Spirit.

In the name of Jesus the Messiah, I declare that Satan has no longer any access to my body, soul, or spirit through that soul tie.

In the name of Jesus the Messiah, I declare that Lilith and her children have no access to my children or future children anymore. All access to my children or future children for this spirit is now cut off by the power of God. I ask that You, God, cover my children with the Blood of the Lamb and that the doors of her access to them will be sealed forever with Your blood.

In the name of Jesus, I fire every gatekeeper who helped Lilith gain access to me. I strip them of all power and authority, and I tear up their appointment letters in the name of Jesus the Messiah, and I ask that You burn these documents with the fire of the Holy Spirit.

I seal every gate and door with the Blood of Messiah, and I ask that you appoint your warring angels to guard these gates or doors.

I renounce the ecstatic state of love and the sexual power that I gained through Lilith, in the name of Jesus the Messiah.

Father, I ask You to destroy the web of Lilith that she used to entangle me and to free me completely from her web of lust and intoxication. I ask you, Father, to strip Lilith of her armor and to paralyze her as a warrior, in the name of Jesus.

Father, I ask that You turn around the total destruction that follows Lilith and turn it into growth and blessing.

Abba Father, I ask you to sanctify and cleanse my marriage bed or future marriage bed with the Blood of Jesus the Messiah.

Father, I now declare that I will wear the helmet of salvation to protect my mind (conscious and subconscious) and my dream world. I declare that I cast down all arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of the Messiah.

I thank You, Father, for Your mercy and Your grace, and I give You all the honor and the glory, because You alone are God, and I belong to You in Jesus’ name. Amen.

If you don’t know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you can receive Him into your heart, and He can deliver you from darkness and sin and have your name written in His Book of Life.

If you are sincere, you can say this simple prayer to the Father (it doesn’t have to be word for word):

“God, I recognize that I have not lived my life for You up until now. I have been living for myself and that is wrong. Please forgive me of all of my sins just as I forgive others. I need You in my life; I want You in my life. I acknowledge the completed work of Your only begotten Son Jesus Christ in giving His life for me on the cross, I believe in my heart Jesus is Lord and was raised from the dead and I long to receive the forgiveness you have made freely available to me through this sacrifice. Come into my life now, Lord. Take up residence in my heart and be my king, my Lord, and my Savior. From this day forward, I will no longer be controlled by sin, or the desire to please myself, but I will follow You all the days of my life. Those days are in Your hands. I ask this in the Lord and GOD Jesus’ precious and holy name. Amen.”

    Excellent research, my brother, as always – AMAZING article!!!!

    I perceive that Lilith is also the spirit behind the very successful female artists Beyoncé (who claims that a spirit overtakes when she is performing on stage and she calls the spirit or her alter ego “Sasha Fierce”), Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift…. I keep seeing different posts on the internet about these 3 (and others) being involved in some specific occult practices and rituals and worshiping different witches / occult deities – or even leading some cults……. no matter what they do specifically, they will be subject to some sort of authority in the kingdom of darkness.
    In my perception, Lilith and the “Queen of the Coast”, a high hierarchy demonic entity supposedly leading the Marine kingdom, a part of the kingdom of darkness, are not the same, but different, but I could be wrong and I haven’t done any research….. perhaps you have come across myths (or truths) about both of them and their relation, or about sources saying that they are identical….?

    Anyhow, I believe it’s not so important of who the specific entity behind someone or something, some movement or teachings is (by the way, how RIDICULOUS is the announcement of Lilith being an “empathetic” demon??? There is absolutely no demon who would ever, under any circumstances have any empathy with any of their victims!!!!!!!!) – as long as people learn to see and discern and perceive that there is something evil, dark and ungodly behind it and that they need to steer clear of this person, their art, their message, their company, otherwise they will be infested, defiled, demonized, afflicted, haunted and tormented by demons.
    Period.

    I cannot stress enough to anyone reading this how important this blog and your work is my dear brother, if I hadn’t found the truth you keep publishing, who knows what would have been with me when I was trapped in deep darkness……

      Hi Eva, thank you for sharing what you saw in these celebrities. It helped me to have a clearer grasp of what Lilith may look like. So here are some keywords that seem applicable: rebellious, provocative, noisy, ungodly boldness and confidence (in themselves). I couldn’t help but think of the immoral woman in the Book of Proverbs too.

      1. I think you are “spot on”, except that in my perception the seductiveness and erotic attraction of all satanic entities stands out the most and is something we cannot emphasize enough and is the most prominent “feature” – for me…..
        Even in my own experience, when the devil himself appeared to me after I got saved, to scare me and / or lure me back, on the occasion when he appeared to me in human form (in the flesh in the middle of my room!!), he was the most beautiful and irresistible man I’ve ever seen!!
        And only through the power of GOD in me was I able to resist him……
        We mustn’t underestimate their power – not glorifying them, but being careful, because they are not stupid and have been around much longer than we have – so being watchful, prayed up and armed with the full armor of GOD at all times is key!!!

            Hi anonymous commenter, if you are a believer of Jesus, I sincerely suggest you to take Christ’s ministry of casting out demons seriously and literally. Demons are not some sort of allegory.

            And if you have anything upbuilding to say or discuss, it’s totally welcome. But don’t you mess with my sister that’s my bottom line. She shared what she experienced with her LIFE–it’s not something you can comment on like this as if you’re watching some garbage drama while eating junk food.             I think this is a good example of someone who is demonized and under the devil’s deception – the “buzzwords” this person is using are standing out, literally screaming, as they are in their expression, using to many caps…

            It is clear that the article and our discussion has triggered this person and that they are manifesting and this is what compelled them to make this comment and correct my statements.
            It’s ok – I have seen this many times.
            In fact, I have been there myself before I got saved!
            It’s actually a good sign!
            The fact that they feel the need to express / defend “their truth” means that GOD is working on them and all we can do is pray for them….

After my kid brother’s untimely death and years of intense therapy I am ecstatically recovered from fundamentalist brainwashing.
