“Santa Muerte (‘Saint Death’) is currently the fastest-growing new cult in the Americas with an estimated 10 to 12 million followers worldwide, mostly in Mexico, with significant numbers in the USA and Central America. It’s a mixture of pre-Columbian Mexican reverence for death and Spanish Catholic beliefs. Worshippers will bring offerings such as tequila, beer, cigarettes, traditional snacks and flowers for Santa Muerte. Santa Muerte’s hooded skeletal idol can be seen in stores and shrines across Mexico, where devotees pray to the ‘Goddess of Death’ for love, healing, and career success. Devotees feel comfortable going to her with nasty and selfish prayers. More than half the prayers directed at her are believed to include appeals to harm other people via curses and death magic. Smuggle cocaine into the USA and you want supernatural help? They call upon Santa Muerte. Drug traffickers are believed to offer human sacrifices to Santa’s Muerte in exchange for help in avoiding arrest and making money. The spirits behind idols are devils and the worship of them opens a person to demonization. Reportedly, exorcists have prayed for people who have been oppressed by demons after praying to Santa Muerte. Demons may give what people petition but their endgame is to destroy. Why worship a spirit of death and not the Creator? Those who love death hate God (Prov. 8:36). The Lord Jesus Christ is the life (Jn. 11:25) and came to give life and life more abundantly (Jn. 10:10), who desires no one to perish but to come to repentance (2 Pet. 3:9) and to be saved and come to the knowledge of truth (1 Tim. 2:4).”
Other names for this idol are Señora de la Noche (‘Lady of the Night’), La Dama Poderosa (Spanish for ‘The Powerful Lady’), and La Nina Blanca (The White Lady).
In this video, it documents a Christian Pastor casting out demons of people in Mexico. Many of the people got possessed by worshipping Santa Muerte.
Worship or veneration of anyone or anything is idolatry, and the Bible condemns idolatry (Gal. 5:19-21).
If you don’t know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you can receive Him into your heart, and He can deliver you from darkness and sin and have your name written in His Book of Life.
If you are sincere, you can say this simple prayer to the Father (it doesn’t have to be word for word):
“God, I recognize that I have not lived my life for You up until now. I have been living for myself and that is wrong. Please forgive me of all of my sins, just as I forgive others. I need You in my life; I want You in my life. I acknowledge the completed work of Your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ in giving His life for me on the cross, I believe in my heart Jesus is Lord and was raised from the dead and I long to receive the forgiveness you have made freely available to me through this sacrifice. Come into my life now, Lord. Take up residence in my heart and be my king, my Lord, and my Savior. From this day forward, I will no longer be controlled by sin, or the desire to please myself, but I will follow You all the days of my life. Those days are in Your hands. I ask this in the Lord and GOD Jesus’ precious and holy name. Amen.”
Sort of morbid, into drugs, smuggling, alcohol and crime… my take is that this is the same spirit which inspired the “Pirates of the Caribbean” trilogy (or were there more?) – and the movies coming out and feeding that spirit and then the movement growing so largely in the same decade is most likely not a coincidence… sadly, I believe we will he
