“Brought to Cuba by the Yoruba peoples of West Africa, Santería is a syncretic faith based on the development of personal relationships—through divination, sacrifice, initiation, and mediumship—between practitioners and the orisha spiritual entities. These orishas intercede in the daily lives of humans and, if properly appeased, can help mankind.

In Santería, practitioners use oracle consultation, interpreting consecrated cowrie shells (or, in the related Ifá system, palm nuts) to reveal the orishas’ responses to a seeker’s questions. They then prescribe some form of sacrifice to one or more of the orishas. In 1993, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the right of devotees to practice the controversial rite of animal sacrifice, which remains central to the faith. Orishas favor certain foods, which worshipers bring to ceremonies. Music, dancing, and drumming are prominent in Santería worship and are regarded as equivalents to prayer. Devotees often lose themselves more deeply in the ceremonies as they dance and sing, inviting the presence of the orishas.

Santería also includes spells, talismans, and charms, many of which aim at attracting love, money, or other benefits. Mediums, or channelers, believe they make themselves available to the spirits of departed human beings or other entities. Once in a trance state, the channeler may speak with voices unlike his or her normal voice, and facial expressions often change when the other entities are understood to be speaking.

There are an estimated 2 million people who dabble in Santería in the United States and 75–100 million in Latin America. The most famous practitioner is said to be Jennifer Lopez.

The Bible condemns all forms of witchcraft, channeling, divination, and idolatry. Those who practice such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God (Galatians 5:19-21). The orishas to whom devotees pay homage are nothing other than Satan’s demons masquerading—spirits who tremble at the Lord Jesus Christ.”

I acknowledge the completed work of Your only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, in giving His life for me on the cross; I believe in my heart that Jesus is Lord and was raised from the dead, and I long to receive the forgiveness You have made freely available to me through this sacrifice. Come into my life now, Lord. Take up residence in my heart and be my king, my Lord, and my Savior. From this day forward, I will no longer be controlled by sin or the desire to please myself, but I will follow You all the days of my life. Those days are in Your hands. I ask this in the Lord and GOD Jesus’ precious and holy name. Amen.”
