Jesus said He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life and no man can come to the Father except through Him (John 14:6).”
Not many people don’t realize it, but Hinduism has greatly influenced the world even outside of India. Hindu beliefs permeate popular books, television programs, and movies. For example, there is yoga, which millions of Americans practice. Yoga originated from Hinduism. We all have heard someone say the word karma as if it is something real. That concept also originated from Hinduism. And what about Meditation? Though meditation is not exclusive to Hinduism, the cross-legged lotus position with outstretched arms is distinct from Hinduism.
So what is Hinduism? The big idea of the religion is to gain freedom from the world as we see it. Practitioners think they need to disconnect from the material existence around them to understand how to connect with the supposed oneness of the world.
In Hinduism, God (Brahman) is believed to be unknowable, the one impersonal, ultimate, spiritual reality. Sectarian Hinduism personifies Brahman as Brahma (creator, with four heads symbolizing creative energy), Vishnu (preserver, the god of stability and control), and Shiva (destroyer, the god of endings). Most Hindus worship two of Vishnu’s ten mythical incarnations: Krishna and Rama. On special occasions, Hindus may also worship other gods, such as family and individual deities. In Hinduism, belief in astrology, and curses also prevail.
Hinduism accepts several forms of pantheism and rejects the Christian concept of creation, in which God is separate from his creation. In Hinduism, Brahman alone exists; everything (the universe, earth, man, rocks, animals, fire, etc.) is ultimately an illusion (maya). Brahman caused the illusion of creation. There is no beginning nor ending to creation, only infinite repetitions or cycles of creation and destruction. Also, history has no value because everything is based on an illusion.
Because of this worldview, Hindus have no motivation to help the poor, fight against hunger, or injustices because everything is an illusion anyway. Every person has as much value as a cow or a rock. In India’s caste system, it is interpreted as being in accordance with karma. Through good deeds in this life, a person supposedly has the opportunity for reincarnation in a higher caste. But one will not know if they are successful to be born into a new caste. The negative consequence of believing that you can only be born into a caste is that it hinders Hindus of any motivation to attempt moving from one caste system to another in this life or to help someone in a poorer situation. The result is a religion that generally lacks the desire to help the poor obtain education and a better way of life. Jesus however taught to help the poor (Matt. 25:31-40).
In Hinduism, there is no concept that because of man’s rebellion against the one true living God, man is separated from Him. Hindus have no clear idea or plan for salvation.
In Christianity, Jesus Christ is the Savior who can rescue us from the destructive power of sin in our lives. He is the only One who can reconcile a person to God because He died (though He resurrected) on the cross as a propitiation for sins (Romans 3:24).
To Hindus, Moksha (freedom from infinite being and selfhood and final self-realization of the truth) is the goal of existence. Yoga and meditation are thought to be ways to moksha. In Hinduism, your personality is the problem, an illusion that you must be willing to accept.
In contrast to Christianity, to know the one true God and Jesus Christ is eternal life, and Christians look forward to dwelling with Him. (John 17:3; Revelation 22:1-4). The Bible teaches that you’re important to God and unique. God desires to have a personal relationship with you, not have you become a part of him.
In Hinduism, one of the ways of salvation is the way of devotion, known as bhakti-yoga. This is the most popular way among regular people of India. This devotion involves a person surrendering to one of the many gods and goddesses of Hinduism. This lifetime commitment is expressed through acts of worship, temple rituals, and pilgrimages.
In reality, the gods Hindus worship are nothing but demons masquerading as gods. One can open himself or herself to demonization by worshiping demon false gods.
Summary of Comparison Between Hinduism with Christianity
God
From a Hindu perspective, there are over 330 million gods.
From a Biblical perspective, there is but one God manifested in three distinct Persons who co-exist simultaneously: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Holy Book
In Hinduism, the Vedas, the Upanishads, the Mahabharata, the Ramayana, and the Bhagavad Gita are considered holy books. The Bhagavad Gita is considered the most popular and sacred book.
To Christians, the Holy Bible is authoritative.
Sin
In Hinduism, there is no concept of personal sin against God.
In Christianity, all people have sinned against God (except Jesus), and that is why people need a Savior.
Jesus Christ
In Hinduism, Jesus is not the Messiah, God’s unique Son. He did not die for the sins of many on the cross. He also did not rise from the dead. He was just a man who realized his divine nature.
In Christianity, Jesus is God’s perfect Son, holy, resurrected, divine (2nd Person of the Trinity, yet fully human.
Salvation
Moksha (freedom from infinite being and selfhood and final self-realization of the truth) is the goal of existence, not salvation.
In Christianity, salvation is only obtained by faith in Jesus Christ, and salvation is given by grace, not by works.
Afterlife or After death
Repeated reincarnation until a person is reabsorbed into Brahman.
At death, all people will enter heaven or hell based on whether they have salvation in Jesus Christ. The Bible does not support the idea of reincarnation. It is appointed a man to die once and after is the judgment, reads the Bible (Hebrews 9:27; Luke 1:19-31).
Hinduism does not hold a single similarity with biblical Christianity when it comes to foundational areas.
